Boys emerged as toppers but girls outshined them in terms of overall pass percentage in both Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education.

Boys emerged as toppers but girls outshined them in terms of overall pass percentage in both Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE), the results of which were announced by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday.

This is for the first time that the results were announced by chief minister Chouhan. Chouhan also announced that the government will bear the education expenses of students from poor sections of the society.

Over 18 lakh student appeared for the Class 10 and Class 12 exams. In Class 10, 49.9% students passed and the overall pass percentage in the case of girls was 51.46 and 48.5% boys cleared the exam. In Class 12, 67.8% students - 72.3% girls and 64.1% boys - passed the exams.

However, the overall pass percentage for both the classes saw a dip as compared to last year. In Class 10, there was a dip of nearly 3% and for Class 12 there was a decline of 1.5%.

Sanyam Jain scored 97% marks in science stream with mathematics to become the overall topper in Class 12. There are 118 students in the merit list of Class 12.

After the announcement of the results, a Class 12 student committed suicide in Jabalpur as she could not clear one subject. Another Class 12 student tried to commit suicide by consuming poison in Gwalior. She was admitted to a hospital and is stated to be in a critical condition.

School education minister Vijay Shah urged parents to support their children who either scored poor marks or failed in the exams.

“MP government’s ‘Ruk Jana Nahi Scheme’ will save the year of the students. Under the scheme, the examination will be held again in June and October for students who failed. We don’t want students to take any extreme step due to poor marks,” said Shah.
