New programmes in special education

IGNOU launches BEd, special education, and a certificate in early childhood special education (cerebral palsy)

Indira Gandhi National Open University, or IGNOU, launched a distance-mode BEd (special education) programme in hearing impairment, mental retardation and visual impairment, in association with Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). The university also added certificate programmes in early childhood special education, enabling inclusion – cerebral palsy, in association with the council.

Starting in the current session, the two-year BEd programme is open to graduates from any University Grants Commission-recognised university with at least two years’ post-Bachelor’s experience in any disability area in a special school. The university will give weightage to applicants meeting any one of the following conditions: Be a parent of a child with disability, be a person with disability, hold an RCI-recognised diploma in special education, have completed an RCI-organised or -recognised foundation or bridge course. Prospectus will be available till August 31, 2009.

In the same session, the university has introduced the certificate in early childhood special education, enabling inclusion (cerebral palsy), being implemented in 11 states. The minimum eligibility criterion is class X. Seventy per cent of the seats are reserved for parents/ family members of children with disability, the disabled themselves, those with two years of experience of working with the disabled and/or those who have completed the awareness-cum-training packages offered as a non-credit programme through IGNOU. The rest of the seats will be for open enrolment.
