Novel robot by IITians

Four undergraduate students from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay have bagged the top prize in the student design contest 2006 category for developing a novel robot.

Four undergraduate students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Bombay have bagged the top prize in the student design contest 2006 category for developing a novel robot.

The contest was organised by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' (ASME) International. The robot 'CATCH PHRASE', had to throw a sandbag weighing 50 gram, which represented a bait, as close as possible to the target set by the judges and retrieve it, Prof G Ukadgaonker, Faculty Advisor, ASME student section at IIT Bombay said on Friday.

The distance from which the robot had to retrieve the sandbag was between 6 metre to 10 metre. The winning team from IIT Bombay has been invited by the ASME International to Chicago in November 2006 to compete with the rest of the 12 regions which are in North America (USA, Canada and Mexico), Ukadgaonker added.
