‘Parents/ guardians are requested not to enter the department or office premises. This delays the admission process’ – the notice put by Gargi authorities outside their office explains the problem many colleges are facing these days.
One would find more parents than students at the admission counters. They have got more queries than their children and eventually end up irritating the college staff. But despite all the stern tactics employed by colleges, parents never give up.
Admissions for them is literally a family affair and they ensure that their child has enough support during this important phase of his/her life. “My daughter still does not know her way around, that is why me and my wife come with her. She will learn to tackle everything herself,” explained Sarabjit Singh, who had come to Kamala Nehru College.
“It seems each student is accompanied by three adults. We have small classrooms allotted for admission work and counselling but they get jam-packed due to the crowd. Other students are forced to stand outside the corridors and wait for their turn,” says Gargi principal Meera Ramchandran.
It’s the same story at Delhi College of Arts and Commerce. “A father of a girl who had just got admission came up to me and said that he preferred LSR for her but she could not make the cutoff,” said an official of DCAC. “Then he had the gall to ask me if she will make it to LSR in the second list.”
