With rapid advancements in technology used for treating infertility problems (which were not curable earlier), there has been an upsurge of opportunities for infertility specialists over the last two decades. And those who can use this technology effectively are in demand.

“Development in infertility treatment is the result of continuous research in every sphere. This is the most difficult stream of medicine but being an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) specialist is one of the most rewarding careers possible, because you are changing the life of a family by helping them give birth to a child. In this field, success does not depend on a single clinician but on the entire team of specialists from different streams,” says Abha Majumdar, director and head, centre of IVF and human reproduction, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

Infertility specialists treat people who are unable to reproduce. Treatment ranges from simple medication to operative laparoscopy and hysteroscopy (to find the cause of infertility) and surgical interventions, if necessary. If these treatments don’t work, assisted reproductive techniques are opted for. They include IUI (intra uterine insemination), IVF (in vitro fertilisation), IVF-ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), wherein a sperm is injected into the egg using a micro manipulator, PGD (pre-implantation genetic diagnosis which tests chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo).

“Stay updated on reading related to fertility treatment as the subject is advancing rapidly. The joy you bring to people who can’t have children can never be compared to anything else. But unsuccessful treatment can lead to frustration. Practitioners need to understand that science has its own limitations and be able to take it in their stride,” says Majumdar.
