The CBSE Class XII results have thrown up some pleasant surprises this year — 812 students received more than 90 per cent marks in Mathematics breaking a 10-year record.
Another 512 students got more than 95 per cent marks in English Core — many of them scored 100 per cent. But look closely and the facts still don’t look too rosy. The old culprits like Mathematics, Economics, English are still responsible for a sizeable number of students not passing the exams.
As many as 9,158 Delhi students failed in Economics, while 5,245 could not muster pass marks in Mathematics. In English 7,728 students were unable to pass.
“The trends are persistent. These subjects continue to pull down performances. There’s been a marginal improvement this year, but a sizeabl
e chunk continues to find these subjects unmanageable. A bulk of these students are from government schools,” said CBSE exam controller Pavnesh Kumar.
Kumar feels Economics has been claiming a heavier toll than Maths. “Students are choosing Economics because there’s a huge demand for those with an economics background. But since all these subjects are understanding based, students fail,” said Kumar.
Others feel there aren’t enough good teachers. The education directorate also seems to be thinking along those lines, and for the first time they are training their teachers. The directorate has also started rating teachers on the basis of their students’ results.
