For the first time in the history of DUSU elections, a presidential debate scheduled for Wednesday was cancelled. Organisers cited several instances of violence as the reason for scrapping the debate.
In the run-up to the elections, student bodies are accusing each other of organising attacks. Be it the north campus, south campus or campuses of outer colleges, separate incidents of violence have come to light ever since student leaders filed their nomination papers.
The DUSU election is scheduled for September 11. The student bodies accept that this year the number of clashes have increased. But the matter blew out of proportion on Wednesday when National Student’s Union of India (NSUI) presidential candidate Pradeep Vijayran alleged that he was attacked by Chatra Yuva Sangharsh Sansthan (CYSS) members at PGDAV College in south Delhi. In no time, pictures of Vijayrand ripping blood and then with his head bandaged started doing the rounds.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also alleged that their presidential candidate was attacked by NSUI and of other volunteers being attacked by CYSS at Shraddanand College.

{{/usCountry}}NSUI Delhi unit president Vikas Chikara blamed CYSS and ABVP for the attack. “Around 10.30 am, the goons of CYSS and ABVP asked our candidates Pradeep Vijayran and Prerna Singh not to campaign in the college campus. When they refused, they attacked our candidates with rods,” he said.
On Tuesday too, a clash had broken out between ABVP and CYSS at the Campus Law Centre where certain students were injured. The violence seems to have hit the campus hard as student bodies take to Twitter and Facebook to talk about the violence.
The two old timers — the ABVP and NSUI have alleged that the entry of AAP’s student wing CYSS has triggered such violence at DU.
“Earlier too NSUI used to indulge in money and muscle power but CYSS beats them all. Bringing MLAs to campus and then fighting with people is all that they do,” said Rohit Chahal, ABVP national secretary.
