“I wanted to become self-dependent and decided to do an apprenticeship programme in mechatronics rather than pursuing a conventional degree which doesn’t guarantee a job on completion,” says Varsha Pawale, one of the winners.

India will be competing for 27 skills in Brazil. Competitions for 19 skills, out of the 27, have already been held and 21 winners have been declared. The India leg of the contest was organised by the National Skill Development Corporation.

Over 1,000 young people (under 23 years ) compete in more than 46 skill categories in the WorldSkills competition held across different countries every alternate year.

The competition categories include transportation and logistics, manufacturing and engineering technology, information and communication technology, creative arts and fashion, social and personal services, construction and building technology.
