Indian National Congress's Dinesh Gundu Rao won the election upstaging Bharatiya Janata Party's A.R. Sapthagiri Gowda by a margin of 10,070 votes.

The top three candidates split 97.2% of votes between them. Indian National Congress's Dinesh Gundu Rao got a total of 47,354 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's A.R. Sapthagiri Gowda secured 37,284 votes. Janata Dal (Secular)'s candidate V. Narayanaswamy grabbed the third spot with 36,635 votes. The top three parties got 38.0%, 29.9% and 29.4% respectively.
