Next time you sit under a tree, spare some thought for it. Since 2007, Delhi has lost over 2000 trees. Dehradun-based Forest Research Institute recently conducted a survey of 6288 trees on 48 roads in the NDMC area.

“Sometimes development imperatives require cutting of trees but there are regulations to provide compensation,” says Professor VK Jain, School of Environment, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Over 900 trees have been cut in areas under the jurisdiction of MCD for various civil works while 850 got uprooted due to storm or rains. “The coolest thing about Delhi is its trees,” says Anuj Sethi of Hindu College. “If we lose the trees, we’ll be in trouble.”
