Rituparno Ghosh lauded at film festival in New York

Rituparno Ghosh won the best director award for Dosar at the five-day Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council (MIAAC) Film Festival in New York.

Rituparno Ghosh won the best director award for Dosar at the five-day Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council (MIAAC) Film Festival in New York, while his The Liast Lear, which was the closing film of the event, was also applauded by the audience.

The Last Year, which has Amitabh Bachchan in the role of an ageing Shakespearean actor, has further cemented Ghosh's reputation as a successor to Satyajit Ray's legacy.

The best film award at MIAAC festival went to Manorama Six Feet Under, a murder mystery directed by Navdeep Singh, and starring Abhay Deol, Raima Sen and Gul Panag.

Danny Denzongpa won the best actor award for his role in Frozen while Konkona Sen Sharma bagged the best actress award for Dosar.

Salman Rushdie, Mira Nair, Shashi Tharoor, Madhur Jaffery and Anand Mahindra -- who is the main sponsor of the festival -- gave the awards away.

Other celebrities present at the annual event that is now in its seventh year included Milind Soman, Abhay Deol, Buddhadeb Das Gupta and Shonali Bose.

Besides India, films from various countries including Kuwait, France, Britain, Canada and the US were shown at the event.
