Chikan garments are top on the US consumers' shopping list.
No wonder local exporters of Chikan garments are increasingly developing e-business models and setting up warehouses in the United States to ensure faster delivery of garments in the North American markets.
The success of more than a dozen e-commerce websites for sale of Chikan garments online during the past three years had now prompted a local technology solutions provider Om Solutions to establish its own representative office and a warehouse in the United States for selling Chikan garments in North America.
"We are the first in Lucknow to have established our own representative office and a warehouse in United States which deals exclusively in Chikan garments in the North American markets," Nitin Tripathi, Managing Director of Om Solutions told HT Lucknow Live.
He said the company had been sourcing garments from artisans in Malihabad near Lucknow who are being supplied with the requisite raw material for making garments for the North American consumers.
Within the country, local NGOs have been helping artisans get in touch with importers in the West Asia, United States and the European Union markets for exporting Chikan garments.
"Instead of purchasing garments from retailers in the city it was decided to get Chikan kurtas and salwars made by artisans in Malihabad for shipping them to our own warehouse in the United States," Tripathi said.
The development of an e-commerce model which relies on payments made for sale of merchandise through credit cards is underway to enable online transactions with the delivery of the product being made within United States instead of products being shipped individually from India, he added.
The US-based buyers would specify the size of garments required on the website and make payments through credit cards. The product would get delivered within a day through the company's warehouse in the United States, he said.
"The United States is the largest market for Chikan garments where exporters have traditionally fetched a fairly good price for the shipped items. For example a men's Chikan kurta retails between US $ 15 to 60 a piece," Tripathi said.
