Detractors always told me that the government would never sanction the Fashion Hub concept. Now we have the news that the Hub, after all, is in motion and the construction of the same will begin later this year.

There’s an interesting background to this concept. About a couple of years ago, it was the then FDCI board member and fashion designer Leena Singh of Ashima-Leena who first told me about the proposal for such a concept. An excited Singh told me that with the help of her friends Jagdish Tytler and the urban development minister Ajay Maken things will work out, and it will be the biggest thing that can happen to India’s fashion industry.

The project went through several roller coaster rides and some of the leaders of FDCI told me in private that with their experience with the functioning of the government Fashion Hub will never happen from the government’s side. I remember every time I met Leena Singh, she was confident that it will happen, but disappointed at the same time that some of the people who should ideally be working towards making the Hub happen were working against it. Later, at one of the fashion weeks Maken made a public announcement of about the 10 acres of land being earmarked for this concept through the DDA.

This will put an end to the organisers racing in all directions looking for places to host fashion weeks. Permanent stalls for designer boutiques can offer visitors a nice shopping experience and for buyers, who want to visit any time of the year, facilities for inspection.

While the concept sounds great, I feel governing of the same also should be done diligently by those who understand fashion and, more importantly, the politics that comes with it in abundance. Let there be space for deserving fashion designers in the Hub and let the business of fashion, and not the politics of it, be the winner here.
