It’s time to stop comparing carats and start sizing up canvases. Judging by the recent projects of three of India’s most celebrated female artists, Sujata Bajaj, Seema Kohli and Jayasri Burman, expensive artworks are the newest way to wear your bling. Tarana Khubchandani, proprietor of Gallery Art and Soul came up with the idea to get the artists to create miniature original works on pendant-sized canvases, which were then turned into necklaces by designer Kanchan Khubchandani. Proceeds from the sales will go to NGO Save The Children’s initiative Dhvani, a fundraising project for children in need of cochlear implant surgery.

“Mana Shetty of Save The Children is a dear friend and we had thought of this idea about a year ago to raise funds. The show was designed to enable these children to have this surgery which is otherwise very expensive,” reveals Tarana.

The duo selected the artists based on whether their work would look complete in a smaller format. “The brief was that the pendants should look like original pieces of art. All of the works are new and commissioned especially for this charity. The designer has framed all the artworks in a way that compliments their beauty without overpowering it,” says Tarana.

The artists have admitted that working in smaller formats was more challenging than exploring their skills on a large canvas. Says Seema Kohli, “I’ve never worked in such a miniature format before. I had to push my boundaries a little and to see my paintings transformed by design was a sheer pleasure.”

The necklaces are available at Gallery Art & Soul, 1, Madhuli, Shivsagar Estate, Worli.
