When I came out of Manish Arora’s showing on the third day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW), I had a question: “Is he an artist or a fashion designer?” I concluded that he is a designer who presents art installations. Each piece was so painstakingly created that a series of articles is needed to describe them.

As an awed audience watched, the designer came out with textured dresses, coats and tunics with embroidery and beading in prints of pink giraffes, dolphins and a variety of insects. Seen on some of the outfits was a stag’s head or a giant crab sculpted in fabric… the feel of the forest was accentuated through animal-shaped handbags ... creativity at its best and, at the same time, shocking.

The five-some GenNext show of new faces was a mixed bag with Yuvraj Siddharth Nagpal a winner with his impeccable tailoring. Next were Ritesh Kumar Ridzyn and Koga by Jenjum & Jesleen. Not So Serious by Pallavi Mohan was pleasant but Jyotee Khaitan, who presented her collection first, finished last in the race. Yet another perfect landing on the runway was the label am:pm by Ankur and Priyanka Modi. Their collection was not only stylish and modern, but executed flawlessly with perfect, neat finishing. Way to go!

Puja Arya who shared the runway looked more suitable for spring/summer with softer fabrics and flowy silhouettes.
Manish Gupta and Zubair Kirmani, who came next, paved the way for another set of fashionable, intelligent collections. Manish, whose collection impressed me last season at the Lakmè Fashion Week, was as consistent this season with an intelligently executed collection. Zubair stayed away from ornamentation this time with a chic presentation that was a pleasure to watch.

Over all, a creativity-filled day.
