The Delhi University may be famous for hailing new trends on the first day of campus action every year, but on day one this year, fashion seemed to have taken a beating from the sky-high cut-offs that were announced on Tuesday.

There were no style statements to see — only sad, dejected faces and dull wardrobes floating about.

“Yes, I feel very depressed,” said Aparna Handa, 17, seen outside Hindu College on Wednesday, dressed in a simple churidar-kurta. “I went shopping over the weekend just for today but the minute I saw the cut-offs, I just wanted to wear black,” said Muskaan Ahmed, another aspirant spotted near Kirori Mal College. Vipin Handa, 17, whom we caught near Khalsa College, told us, “We were hoping to see a fashion spectacle but I guess no one was in the mood for fashion after the bad news.” Esha Bhatnagar, 17, who scored 75% in the Arts stream, was sitting in a corner with her mother. “I am very upset. Don’t even talk about fashion ... all I can think of is cut-off trends.”
