With almost every college in the Capital now hosting an annual fashion show, style is more than a lifestyle choice for students. Given the popularity of on-campus fashion shows and the creativity of student designers, Delhi’s colleges may well become the next fashion hub. “The last few years have definitely seen a greater interest in fashion shows on campus because of media hype and fashion weeks in the city,” says Sahil Chhabra, a fashion coordinator at the College of Vocational studies (CVS).
Most colleges now have their own fashion societies. These societies hold auditions that are open to all the students. After a few rounds of selection, a fashion team is formed. This team represents the college in all inter-college festivals and competitions.Though colleges such as Ram Lal Anand and Hansraj have not had fashion teams in past years, the teams were revived recently after numerous requests from freshers.
At CVS, it’s the guys who are more interested in fashion. “There were more than 200 entries for the auditions, out of which we had to select only 25. It was a tough job. Even now, I regularly get enquires as students really want to be a part of this club. Surprisingly, it’s the guys who are more enthusiastic to be a part of this team. Maybe because it helps them impress girls,” says Sahil Chhabra, another fashion coordinator at CVS.
Fashion shows have also become a must-have at annual festivals, where dance, debate and theatre hitherto held fort. Students say this is because it results in a good turn out.“Fashion shows are one of the main crowd pullers due to the glamour quotient attached to it. They always attract a lot of people,” says Parul, a student of the Institute of Home Economics.This trend seems to be encouraging students to pursue fashion as a career.“I started modelling for my college team in first year and now want to take it up professionally,” says Chandni Nasir, who walked for designer Tarun Tahiliani at a fashion week held in the Capital.
