Faye Dunaway Oscars gown: Shivan-Narresh accuse Prabal Gurung of copying their design
Delhi-based designers Shivan and Narresh have called out New-York based Prabal Gurung for design imitation. Shivan says it’s high time the fraternity stands up for what is right.fashion and trends Updated: Mar 07, 2017 19:34 IST
There is a clear line between inspiration and imitation. For designer duo, Shivan-Narresh, that line has been overstepped. ET Panache recently reported that the duo found similarity between their design from a few seasons back, and that of Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung’s creation that Hollywood actor Faye Dunaway wore to the recent Oscars. “It’s really shocking. You could be inspired from a particular artist, but this is going a little too far.
When it comes to modern design in India there aren’t many takers, but we still try to innovate for our audience. That’s why anyone would look at Indian labels. After all this hardwork, it just feels bad that somebody with the advantage of sitting in New York can do this,” says Shivan Bhatiya, talking to HT City. “The human eye is trained to decipher what’s a copy and what’s an inspiration. While there’s an audience for both, the truth is clear,” he adds.
Did they get in touch with Gurung? “We don’t need validation if it this has been done intendedly. We brought it up because it’s time to highlight such things,” says Shivan, who’s, however, not bitter. “In the long run, it might mean that the West looks at us for inspiration.” Till the time of going to press, a response from Gurung’s team was awaited.
