Don’t know what to do with the oversized dress you bought on impulse on your last trip abroad? Or have you been perennially in love with your boyfriend’s printed shirt, but can’t think of a cool way to wear it yourself? How about giving the outfits you love, but can’t wear or are bored off, a fashionable rehaul? Well, that’s what reconstructive designing is all about, and designers specialising in it can give any old garment a brand new look.
One such Delhi-based designer, Timsy Mittal, makes tube dresses, sheaths and shift dresses from old shirts, kurtas, maxis and dresses. She even made a jacket out of a client’s ill-fitting trousers once! “The fabric of the trousers was very good, and this guy would just not get rid of it. So, I converted it into a jacket for him,” she shares.
The techniques that she uses to reinvent garments are as interesting as the outcomes. Timsy doesn’t draw a sketch of how the garment is going to look like after the makeover. “It’s like painting abstract. You just go with the flow,” she says. And of course, it’s challenging, as there isn’t much room to make changes in a stitched garment. She also wants to retain the essence of the garment she is working on. “Garments are like memories, so I do feel like retaining some of the basic elements,” says Timsy. So, she introduces subtle yet impactful changes to sex up the garment, such as a belt, a detachable collar, or pleats.
The designer also provides consultancy to give a new look to wardrobes. “There are people who have some 10 LBDs in their wardrobe that they are bored of. I suggest give each one a new look with additions such as a bustier, a funky strap or peplums,” says the designer.
