Fur style’s sake

The world’s fashion brigade may be up in arms against all things fur, and it may be the most politically incorrect style to sport, but that hasn’t deterred Delhi’s party divas from showing off their minks this season.

The world’s fashion brigade may be up in arms against all things fur, and it may be the most politically incorrect style to sport, but that hasn’t deterred Delhi’s party divas from showing off their minks this season.

"If you happen to have it, what’s the point of being hypocritical and not wearing it? I won’t buy real fur now on, but that doesn’t mean I won’t wear what I already have," says Bonnie Arora, spotted wearing a fur collar at a party. "A fur coat keeps you warm without having to resort to layers of woolens. It’s far more glamourous than a stole or a cardigan. Besides, what’s the harm if it has been obtained without endangering any species?" says fashion editor and stylist Radhika Jha, who wore a mink wrap to a recent party.

The trend has found supporters in the fashion frat, too. "We wear and use leather, why the fuss over fur? It’s not like nowadays there’s rampant poaching. Certain animals are specifically farmed for fur, which is exactly what is also done for their meats," says designer Siddartha Tytler, who doesn’t mind using fur in his designs.

The logic doesn’t cut ice with animal rights activists. "When a person wears fur, the message they are giving out is that they are ignorant, callous and cold-hearted. Animals are bludgeoned, hanged, and skinned alive for their fur." says Poorva Joshipura of PETA India.
