The grand finale at the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai on Tuesday night had grand drama in store for fashion watchers.
Delhi-based designer sister duo Gauri and Nainika showcased a collection of voluminous gowns, which fellow designers thought was very similar to that of fashion stalwarts such as Oscar de la Renta and Valentino. Designer Masaba Gupta tweeted sarcastically even before the show, “Skipping lfw finale. But I’m sure valentino and oscar de la renta did a great job (sic).” Later, she said it “was all in good humour.”
Designer Anand Kabra wrote, “An interesting homage to Paris couture week.” He told us, “The collection looked very similar to what I’ve seen on international runways.” Even fashion critics noticed the line’s similarity with international designs. Style blog HHC Guiltfree tweeted, "Lanvin ruffles and Marchesa
origami golds at Gauri-Nainikia finale." HT’s Fashion Editor Vinod Nair says, "The bows, ruffles and corsages that were seen at the show are typical of Oscar de la Renta, but many designers have done it in the past.’’
However, Gauri and Nainika are unfazed. “We would rather concentrate on the positives than the negatives, and if some designers think that our work looks like Oscar de la Renta’s, we are flattered. We share the same sensibilities as Valentino, Oscar de la Renta and Marchesa, as all of them do soft designs,” says Gauri. Their spokesperson Arjun Sawhney says, “The comments only show the insecurity of the designers.” Oscar de la Renta could not be reached for comment.

Oscar de la Renta, 78, is a noted American fashion designer who has worked for labels such as Elizabeth Arden. His clients include celebs such as Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush and Megan Fox.
There was ‘Stilt’ something original!
Besides the drama unfolding on the twitterverse, designers Gauri and Nainika’s grand finale made waves for two girls who walked and danced whimsically on stilts, dressed in voluminous gowns. The girls were part of a special troupe headed by a former member of the fabled Cirque du Soleil. Though some in the audience thoroughly enjoyed the act, some were left bemused. “So the circus is over,” tweeted a fashion editor in the front row.
