If a show can make a Week, fashion designer Shahab Durazi’s finale showing did just that at the HDIL India Couture Week on Sunday. The reticent designer, known well for his “let my creations speak, not me” policy, allowed his work to dictate the terms on the fashion runway. He showed exquisitely constructed and tailored outfits bearing detailing that looked like fine prints. The creations had the perfect combination of structure and fluidity, were extremely feminine and made the girls elegant and beautiful.There’s no doubt that Shahab's showing, after a gap of five years, was one of the best that I have seen on Indian runways. It would have been easily acceptable on Western runways as well.
His creations were painstakingly crafted in black and white, maroon and red, and earthy tones. He used tassels, feathers and bows in the most stylized manner. The shoes and accessories flowed with the overall look, and most importantly, one garment linked beautifully with the next. Shahab's creations should be the ones that our movie stars should be looking for if they have any sense of fashion or style. I have never seen anyone doing wearable high fashion in western silhouettes as well as Shahab did.
On the other hand, at his menswear showing, designer Arjun Khanna rocked the audience by taking the bow in a rather different way — on a vintage Ariel motorbike! He made a rather long line up of guys walk in both western and Indian attire bearing his insignia on their jackets, skinny trousers and stylish accessories. His creations were meant for fit men and held appeal for the young. The stars for the day were Arjun Rampal for Shahab and Abhay Deol for Arjun. While Arjun came wearing a shawl-lapel tux, Abhay came armed with a gun and bullet. He was smiling all the way, suggesting that even a gangster can have a sense of humour!
