If the experts are to be believed, waking up late or having too little time are no excuses for looking sloppy at work. “People frequently ask us for quick make-up tips because getting ready in the morning has to be fast and furious, yet the look must be polished and professional,” says Virginia Holmes, co-owner, Fat Mu make-up academy in Bandra, where workshops are held for all kinds of make-up needs. Here, experts share their handy tips and tricks for developing an efficient morning make-up routine, as well as elevating the same look for a night out, straight from work.

Step 1 Apply some tinted moisturiser. We recommend You Rebel by Benefit.

Step 2 Hide unwanted blemishes and dark circles with a concealer. This one is a must for most of us. Get the right shade and it’ll change your life. M.A.C offers some nice shades.

Step 3 Use eyeliner or kajal for a quick and easy definition on the eyes.

Step 4 Use powder to remove any unwanted shine from the concealer and get a polished, fresh look. Carry a compact version in your bag for quick, easy dabs. Try M.A.C’s blot powders in medium-dark or dark shades. They are very light on the skin.

Step 5 Apply some mascara for good definition on the lash line — top and bottom. Work from the root to the tip in a zigzag motion for even application and maximum definition. Maybelline New York, L’Oreal as well as Lancôme have nice products.

Step 6 Apply some blush by sweeping it on to the apples of your cheeks or the cheekbones, for a fresh, healthy flush. Brands like Bourjois, NYX and The Body Shop have some affordable options.

Step 7 Make a statement with lipstick or some gloss, depending on whether you want to make a statement or just wear something simple yet effective. Keep in mind that a good gloss shouldn’t be too sticky on the lips. M.A.C tinted lip conditioners with SPF are great. Clinique also has good lip tints and glosses.

How to glam it up for the night
Make sure that in the morning, you do your make-up in natural light. if the lighting is wrong, your ‘polished morning look’ can become the ‘night of the living dead look’ later.

Option 1
Add some colour to the eyes. M.A.C’s Woodwinked eye shadow is the shadow of all shadows. It’s beautiful on all skins tones, subtle and sophisticated, popping the eye in a very flattering way. Keep the rest of the colour palette neutral. Just add some lip gloss. Clinique and Chanel are great picks from the luxury segment, while L’Oréal is a nice mid-range pick.

Option 2
Up the look with eyeliner. The Body Shop has some nice ones, and Maybelline New York’s gel liners with brushes are affordable and fun. Add a statement lip colour. Morange and Lady Danger by M.A.C are good options.

Option 3
Use a vibrant colour pop on the eyes with options from Inglot, NYX or Bourjois. Don’t forget to carry a compact along as well.
