In a new initiative started by the organisers of the Lakme Fashion Week, this year, two Indian designers will fight it out for a stage to represent the country at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, Autumn/Winter 2012. The two designers who are selected to be a part of this initiative called, the Berlin Calling show, are Delhi-based designer Aneeth Arora and designer Kallol Datta from Kolkata.
Both designers will showcase their collections on the last day of the Lakme Fashion Week that will be held in Mumbai later this month. Anjana Sharma, director of Fashion, IMG Reliance, that’s co-organising the event says, “We will take the feedback of their collection from our advisory board members and other experts such as international buyers and a leading fashion consultant from London and shortlist one of them.”
The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin is scheduled to take place in January next year. “Berlin has become a very important fashion week in Europe. Since every Fashion week is known for its speciality in terms of fashion, hence it is imperative that we select a designer who is aligned with the fashion week in Berlin. So, the board members applied enough brain to zero down on these two designers as they will surely fair well at Berlin,” says Anil Chopra, CEO of Lakme Lever, co-organisers of Lakme Fashion Week. The selected designer will get inputs from the experts in fashion business to make sure that the first step to Berlin is not just right but the best.
The designers too are excited to represent India on the International platform but are not looking at it as a competition. “It’s a good opportunity as Indian designers do not have a presence in that part of the world. We both have very different design sensibilities, so I don’t think there is any competition,” says Arora, while Datta says, “We have very individualistic signature styles, so there is no competition. For me it’s more about showcasing at Lakme than Berlin and I am following the same parameters for this collection as I always do.”
