You’ve got it done but make sure you know the pros and cons. Piercings can be painful yet exhilarating. Sujata Reddy speaks to some experienced 'piercers' who have 'done' it!

Twenty eight-year-old Ashvini Sharma got her first piercing done when she was 20. “My first stab was on the earlobe... like it was with many of my friends. I loved the way it emphasised a body part. I still do.” she says.

Sharma has since had six piercings done — three in the ears, two on the eyebrow and one cutting the navel. “I think I’ll go for the tongue next,” she muses.

For Sharma, the first piercing was a traumatic experience as she did not know anything about post-care. She was under the impression that a jab in the ear was no big deal and it would heal on its own. Of course, she was wrong.

The lesson she learnt saw her sail through the next five stabs.

Attention grabbing
Piercings can be painful yet exhilarating. The pain is temporary, unless you do something to irritate the wound. Never rub the pierced area and ensure that it is dry at all times to speed up the healing process.

Piercing artist Alvin D’Souza advises a medicated mouthwash for those who get a lip piercing done — before and after you eat something to avoid food particles from getting stuck in the wound.

He warns against piercing your cheek or temple from anyone other than a doctor. “These are highly sensitive spots and crammed with glands. A slip up could result in severe damage to the entire body,” he concludes.
