Make-up nightmares

Make sure you don’t flounder like these stars did, with their make-up.

If a slew of recent public appearances are anything to go by, the celebrity make-up disaster club is fast expanding with new members. At a film premier in Mumbai last week, actor Divya Dutta turned up with her under eye concealer visible as long drawn stripes. Even the almost faultless Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria stepped out for dinner in New York City earlier this month, with chalky white concealer under her eyes, looking like she had just played in a mound of talcum powder.

These public beauty disasters aren’t exceptions either and seem to be fast becoming a regular trend on red carpets the world over. A couple of months ago, actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Uma Thurman both made public outings with faces whiter than a sheet. Were these instances of a blending job gone wrong, bad lighting in their make-up rooms or just poorly applied make-up? Beauty experts feel a little precaution can go a long way in avoiding such a faux pas.

“Concealer is very tricky to apply but if done right, you can avoid such blunders. Besides blending, the trick is to apply a translucent powder once you’re done covering up fine lines etc. The rule is the same with foundation, blend and pat down, always” says make-up guru Ambika Pillai.

Get the concealer right. Here's how…
Try and use a concealer closer to your skin tone. Dark skinned women should generally opt for yellow colour based concealer.
When buying the concealer, don’t match it with the skin on your hand. Instead, match it with the skin on your neck or face.
Forget the heavy powders. Try and use mineral based make-up for a light, natural finish.
When applying, blend the concealer with your fingers, moving back and forth. Make-sure to not pull it any direction under the eyes. Also, try and blend in a translucent powder into the concealer.
Also, when taking off the concealer, always use a cleaner and not just water or a face wash.
