Manish Malhotra will open the Delhi Couture Week on August 8 with a two-and-a-half minute film that’ll be a prelude to the opulent bridal collection he’s showing. “From black and white and sepia tints to a burst of pinks, corals and vibrant orange, we’ll go down the decades, from the 1940s to the present time when the brides are more confident and beautiful without having to be super thin or super fair. And the film will present the concept and reflect the mood of the clothes to follow,” says the designer.

He adds, “My collection begins with whites before moving to younger, innovative colours. The look is classic Indian.”

He’ll be shooting the film in the first week of August in a vintage house in Mumbai with model-turned-actor Vidyut Jamwal and model Anjali Lavania. “No designer has done anything like this before, I’m really excited,” says Manish.

Will this lead to him directing a feature film next? “Maybe,” he says. “I’d like to cut down my film designing to just two to three special ones and open more stores across India and work with local artisans from Kashmir and Mijwan instead.

In three years, I’ll complete 25 years in the film industry and 10 years with my label. Maybe then I can think of another film to trace my innings.”

By now everyone knows that Kareena Kapoor is planning to wear to-be mom-in-law Sharmila Tagore’s vintage sharara for her wedding. But if Manish were asked to design an outfit for the gala, what would it be? “Kareena defines beauty, confidence and glamour, so I’d give her something classic with a hint of sensuousness that would befit today’s girl.

Red and pink are the colours of this bridal season, red for her since she’s wearing that in all her superhit songs. And a classic black achkan for Saif.”
