Only fresh, please

While I can’t say I am pleased with the way fashion councils are mushrooming and how India is fast gaining recognition as the country with the most fashion weeks in the world, I must say one thing: more runways mean more models. Vinod Nair tells more.

So, the war of the fashion factions begins pretty soon. While I can’t say I am pleased with the way fashion councils are mushrooming and how India is fast gaining recognition as the country with the most fashion weeks in the world, I must say one thing: more runways mean more models. That means new faces.

We badly need younger blood in modelling. I suspect that had it not been for make-up experts, some of the ancient lot would have made fashion shows look like Halloween nights.

In India, the majority of the girls get into modelling when they reach the retirement age on the Western runway. Then they stay there for a decade or longer. Designers and show producers must realise that time stops for none; with the passage of time, spots appear on the skin, the butt goes out of shape and the body sags. But God Almighty! Some of them just won’t stop walking! Not even in their ‘easy chair’ age!

Also, some of the models make me wonder how they were selected in the first place. Often, even the young models appear in fashion weeks with unfit bodies. Or they ‘import’ the worst from the CIS countries (recently, I read in the papers that this variety is imported for other purposes, too, and that one of the ‘importers’ was arrested) and pass them off as ‘super’ models.

Recently, I was in Milan and went to meet the creative director of Calvin Klein. Model casting was happening when I reached. All the girls were lean, tall and fit. One of them told me that the process was quick and efficient without the ‘jury’ looking at them talk and walk, as it happens here. And only the best are picked for the show.

Shall we try it here sometime?
