Earlier, the 60s and 70s saw fashion savvy women wear long skirts with fitted tops and vests, flowers in their hair and a dot on their forehead. This look has made a bold resurgence, with midriff baring boho chic outfits making their presence felt on the international ramp. The inspiration for Emilio Pucci Spring 2012 collection, showcased at the Milan Fashion Week 2011, was clearly gypsy.

Italian label Salvatore Ferragamo’s Fall 2012 collection too has a gypsy theme with models wearing off-shoulder blouses and dresses with flowy skirts, with hair pulled back and braided.

Closer home, the fashion gurus also have a spirited gypsy look to offer. Designer Rina Dhaka’s upcoming collection Urban Tribe captures the spirit of a modern gypsy.

“The block print gypsy skirts from Rajasthan were a rage in the 60s and 70s. French Designer Jean Paul Gaultier came up with the most popular version of the skirt in the 90s. Now, there is a revival taking place,” says Dhaka.
