Exclusive creations were the scene stealers at the kick-off show on Tuesday of the three-day event. Actress Neena Gupta, in a high neck blouse and pink sari arrived with Anil Dharker and took to the front row.
Iris Matais, of the TV show Get Gorgeous, was among those who modelled for the Stefan Hafner jewellery line. Matais’ spunk and attitude were palpable.
Actress Neetu Chandra, showstopper for the brand, looked as if she was in a tearing hurry. Flaunting a ruffled skirt and corset, she whooshed by like a comet.
Wendell Rodricks
His Urban Cocktail Collection showed dresses in sheer fabrics over satin solids — but with just two male models showing all the kurtas and wrap-around skirts. Rodricks’ showstopper happened to be Sonali Kulkarni described at the event as an ‘international actor’ because of her Italian films. For once Kulkarni, often criticised for her disastrous fashion sense, looked uber sensual.
Ritu Beri
The designer showed in Mumbai after nearly a decade. High-energy models walked to the march of volatile drumbeats. Embellished jackets and cholis with belts fused on to some of them evoked applause. Ditto the ruffled skirts and netted saris, part of the bridal wear collection.
Thirty diverse looks had been created, one of them echoing the Alexander McQueen’s signature style. But this could be unfair to La Beri actually.. after all, she did pioneer the overstated-jackets-belted-over-slacks look. Showstopper Vidya Balan, wrapped in a ruffled skirt and blouse with red boots, barely managed to keep herself from tripping on the ramp. But she retained her cool and smiled that lovely Mona Lisa smile of hers.

The closing show, the Gulal compilation, flaunted men in jackets with flowery magnifications teamed with balloon-cum-Jodhpur pants. Only he could have devised this look.. that’s what the applause said loud and clear. Some outfits had complicated constructions. Neha Dhupia, his showstopper, preened, clapped and matched the designer’s enthusiasm.
