Thigh is the new high

Make a hot statement this winter by sporting a pair of thigh-length boots.

What do singer Rihanna, US first lady Michelle Obama, and singer Victoria Beckham have in common? Short hair, if you think, it’s more than that. In fact, it’s knee high. After both Rihanna and Posh were seen sporting over-the-knee (OTK) boots at fashion events, Mrs Obama is believed to have placed an order for it with French designer Robert Clergerie.

OTK boots have clearly swept the fashionistas off their feet. Designer Ritu Beri was spotted wearing brands Sergio Rossi and Aliah “bought from Paris” on two occasions. “This year the trend has really taken off in the international circles. I bought my first pair six years ago, when people here didn’t even know what a thigh high boot was,” says Beri.

American socialite and model Kim Kardashian tweets how she is in love with her pair of black thigh-highs. “Aldo has sold some 40 pairs from its Mumbai and Delhi stores. Most of our clientele comprises celebs, designers and stylists. A pair costs anywhere between Rs 6,500 to 8,000,” says Shaivali, spokesperson, Aldo.

Brands like Gucci, Chloé, Hermes and Louis Vuitton have shown these boots on international ramps. Hermes calls them Trophee boots made from Aviateur goatskin. Says Charu Sachdev of TSG, which handles fashion brands such as Stella McCartney, Moschino, Alexander McQueen in India, “McCartney doesn’t use leather but it has some amazing over-the-knee boots in black. McQueen have also launched them in India. They can be paired with tunics, maxi tops, leather jackets, etc.”
