The biggest education in my life has been through travelling. When I was 19, and used to model, I felt the need to travel as I had never been outside India. I saved all my modelling money and travelled using it, against my Dad’s wishes. He wanted me to start some work with that money.

I’ve been to Singapore and Bangkok twice. Till date, I remember coming out of the Singapore airport and sitting in an air-conditioned cab, excited about the clean roads.

The drive from the airport to the hotel is still fresh in my memory. I came back and applied to get a job with an airline, but when it came to the written exam and the general knowledge questions, I failed, as all I knew then was about films.

When I got into films, I was among the first designers to travel along with the crew. I started styling when the word “stylist” was not even introduced. Since then, life has been all about travelling.

Travelling for films, ads, fashion shows and wedding clients has allowed me to see different parts of the world. Most of my designs, used in famous movies or songs, as well as my collections, have all been thought of either in a plane or at the airport or a hotel.

I feel such experiences not only influence my work, but also the way I approach life. I am writing this column from the beautiful city of Beijing in China and I am already looking forward to being in Dubai towards October End for the Grand Finale Dubai Fashion week.

The traveller in me is the happiest when on the move. Till next week, so long!
