The second day of the Aamby Valley India Bridal Week shone in your face Indians’ predilection for all things bright and blingy. While ethnic wedding wear requires a fair dusting of Swarovski crystals to justify the price tag (usually six digits or more), there is still such a thing as good taste.
Nisha Sagar made an attempt to present a bridal wear collection, but with jarring, glittery surfaces like those, brides will be the cynosure of all eyes for all the wrong reasons. Showstopper Urmila Matondkar was given a lehenga that was easily three times her own body weight, though she valiantly tried to pull it off.
Not so good
Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor didn’t fare much better. Fluffy tulle confections overloaded with enough crystals to light up a dark room, forget about being able to walk around, let alone dance at your own wedding. Even professional models looked terrified as they trudged up and down the staircase, bandaged in yards of gauze and tottering atop sky-high heels.
Showstopper Kangna Ranaut preened and pouted her way down the never-ending runway, wearing a crystallised headdress paired with feathers.
Neeta Lulla, celebrating 25 years of fashion, began with a moderate collection of anarkali churidars, but soon, the velvet and puffy sleeves made an appearance. Still, with the exception of a few avoidable pieces, especially a halter choli with coat tails that seemed like it was fashioned from upholstery fabric, Lulla’s show was easier on the eyes than the ones before.
A bevy of starlets like Soniya Mehra, Shriya Saran, Konkona Bakshi and Lulla’s own designer daughter Nishka closed the show, and thankfully brought an end to a rather long night of flashy fashion.
