Why put stars on ramp?

You would be surprised how many ‘insane’ designers are there who love to convert their collection showcasing into a Bollywood tamasha!, writes Jaydeep Ghosh.

I fail to understand why some on the ramp while showcasing their collections. Until, of course, they want the stars to deflect all the attention from clothes to themselves. But then, which designer in his sane state of mind would be stupid enough to let someone do that? You would be surprised how many ‘insane’ designers are there who love to convert their collection showcasing into a Bollywood tamasha!

Fresh from Lakme Fashion Week where designers indulge in star wars, I could confidently say that designers who put stars on the ramp make horrendous clothes. The fact is that the applause that follows after the show, is only for the filmstars for whom everyone is mad about. I felt sad to see an otherwise bubbly Genelia D’Souza struggling to walk the 50-feet ramp in a heavily embellished over-the-top lehenga. Minissha Lamba was also dwarfed in a rose appliquéd gown.

I quizzed designers on the same. Not many gave honest answers, but one of them said, “When media flashes a star wearing my ensemble, every star-struck girl runs to buy that outfit.” If that’s true, it does make sense to put a star on the ramp. But I have my doubt. How many girls would run to buy that dress which Katrina Kaif wore as Barbie?
