The incident took place at Rajiv Chowk on February 3 when the accused — sub-inspector Dharam Prakash and assistant sub-inspector Dinesh — were allegedly taking a bribe and allowing vehicles to pass from a no-entry zone, instead of imposing penalties on violators.

The police department has now posted a helpline number on its page on social networking website Facebook inviting people to give information about corrupt policemen.

"We were getting a number of complaints against traffic policemen in the area. A team of senior officials set a trap for the accused policemen and took a lift in a dumper. When they reached Rajiv Chowk, the team found that the accused policemen did not stop the vehicle. Instead of issuing a challan, the cops allowed the driver to go through a no-entry zone after demanding a bribe. The two policemen were caught red-handed and have been suspended," said a senior traffic police official.

"We will not tolerate any corruption in our department and such incidents will be considered a serious offence. We have suspended the accused and a departmental inquiry has been initiated," said Bharti Arora, DCP (traffic).
