After Thursday’s gridlock, city gets new traffic head

In another decision taken in the aftermath of chaos in the city following rain on Thursday, Gurgaon police got a new traffic head on Tuesday.

“Considering the heavy load of vehicles on Gurgaon roads, joint commissioner of police Y Puran Kumar has been given the charge of handling the traffic in the city,” said a police spokesperson, adding that the decision was taken during a meeting of officials presided over by commissioner of police Navdeep Singh Virk on Tuesday.

The 2001-batch IPS officer Kumar is posted as joint commissioner of police in Gurgaon since April 2016.

Singh, however, will continue to be the deputy commissioner of crime, the spokesperson said.

The move comes four days after rain triggered miles-long traffic snarls on Gurgaon roads, including the Delhi Gurgaon Expressway. The traffic nightmare began on Thursday afternoon after downpour choked storm drains and flooded roads, triggering the monster jam that was cleared around 4pm on Friday

The 14 crucial points were chosen mainly on the NH-8 (Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway) and NH-248 (Sohna Road) where personnel will be deployed 24x7. An inspector-rank officer will be deployed at each point.
