The arrest of the four suspects on September 13, and subsequent arrest of five of their accomplices, has led to startling revelations about the operations of the gang that has allegedly admitted to a series of sensational crimes, including the Jewar gang rape case, Bulandshahr gang rape and other crimes, police said on Friday.

A Gurgaon Police official, who was part of the team that arrested and questioned the accused, said in case of major hits, the gang would visit a temple and offer sacrifice. The official said they lived “very piously during the Navratras” and always made an obeisance to their Goddess after committing the crime. The official sought anonymity as he is not authorised to talk to the media.

The four men are Dharmu (20) and Munna (20) from Delhi, Lambu (31) from Ballabhgarh, and Rajbir alias Nahar Singh (20) from Jhajjar district in Haryana.

The CBI has sought the four accused on production warrant from a Gurgaon local court to interrogate them in connection with the cases, said sources in the agency.

Later, police arrested five other members of this gang separately. They are Naresh, Raka and Sunil Kumar all of whom hail from Farrukhabad; Ajay, a resident of Rewari; and Jai Bhagwan from Jhajjar.

Gurgaon Police said that it had sent a communication to different agencies investigating these cases but the Uttar Pradesh Police denied it.

“No communique has reached the DGP office or the office of SSP, Noida, regarding the claims being made by criminals of this gang with regard to crimes in this state. The confessions made by these criminals need to be verified using scientific methods like DNA testing, technical surveillance or by identification. At this juncture, it would be premature to accept the information at face value”, said Rahul Srivastav, public relations officer, DGP, headquarters, UP Police.

Sumit Kuhar, deputy commissioner of police (crime), Gurgaon, said they preferred to commit crimes along highways, and struck at homes and farmhouses in secluded locations. “The gang operated in a professional manner and they would conduct recce of a particular area, get information and strike at night,” Kuhar added.

Police said the admitted stopping vehicles on national highways, and then attacking unsuspecting victims to loot, and rape them. Another modus operandi of the gang was to conduct four to five crimes in a night after which they remained low for some time.

According to the chargesheet prepared by Gurgaon Police, apart from admitting their involvement in Mewat’s Dingarheri rape and murder, Mandpura rape, and crimes in Jewar and Bulandshahr, the accused have also confessed their roles in a gang rape in Behror, Rajasthan, a gang rape at a brick kiln at Rabupura village in Gautam Budh Nagar, a gang rape in a farm house in Tappal, Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh.

Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar said the confessional statements of the accused and related information had been sent to police in different states and the CBI. “The claims will be verified by the agencies investigating these cases,” said Khirwar.
