“His condition is quite critical,” said a senior official at the hospital, on condition of anonymity.

However, the doctors have refused to divulge any further details as to why his condition has turned critical.

Shukla (84), who was airlifted from Chattisgarh to the multi-specialty hospital in Gurgaon, has been recuperating in the intensive care unit (ICU), where he has been on the ventilator for the last 12 days.

The former union minister was brought to the hospital on May 26 with three gunshot wounds in the chest and abdomen. He underwent an emergency surgery on the same day, wherein the intestinal injuries were repaired.

He was operated upon by a multi-disciplinary team, headed by Dr Yatin Mehta, chairperson of the institute of critical care and anesthesiology at the hospital. The team comprised 12 specialists from fields of gastro-intestinal, critical care, chest and orthopedics.

In order to pump out the toxins from his body, special filters were used.
