Municipal building bye-laws to apply on Gurgaon’s Lal Dora villages

‘Lal Dora’ is a term introduced during the British colonial rule in 1908. A red line was drawn on maps, delineating the village population from nearby agricultural land for revenue records.

The practice has continued since then and in the ‘Lal Dora’ areas the villagers can build houses without adhering to building bye-laws and can set up certain establishments without permission.

These establishments can vary from shopping malls, parlours, guest houses, to residential complexes.

These establishments though are a burden to residents living in the vicinity of Lal Dora, as occupants of Lal Dora land frequently get their water or electricity supply illegally.

The decision comes after the MCG acceded to the provisions of new Haryana Building Code, 2016, introduced earlier this month that streamlines various building rules and enables uniformity in construction across the state.

MCG officials claim that rules in the Lal Dora area violates with basic norms associated with urban development.

Some of the Lal Dora areas in Gurgaon include Chakkarpur, Nathupur, Ghata, Sikanderpur, Sukhrali and Islampur.
