Employer ‘untraceable’, 1,200 workers protest

A medical equipment manufacturing company in Udyog Vihar, which has about 1,200 staffers, is witnessing a virtual lock-out for the past two-and-a-half months.

Reason: the owner of the company, Eastern Medikit, is untraceable.

Workers have not been paid salary since May 18. On Wednesday, the workers, supported by Hind Majdoor Sabha, a workers’ union body, staged a protest outside the
Mini Secretariat and submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner PC Meena. Meena assured assistance to the president of the company’s employee union, Sanjay Mallik.

While no concrete reason for the employer’s action was given, workers said the owner ‘disappeared’ a few days before June 1, the date which was fixed for settlement of their dues and demanding a hike of 10%-15%.

The labour department has issued several challans against Karun Raj Narang, director of the company, in the court of chief judicial magistrate, Gurgaon, for violations under different acts and breach of a settlement agreement, said Naresh Narwal, additional labour commissioner.

Summons have been sent to the factory management for reconciliation on August 2, said Narwal.
