The 3rd Eye is a mobile device which clicks photographs of traffic offenders and send it to the control room for issuing challans, which are then delivered at peoples’ doorstep.

The project — which was suspended due to the non-availability of resources last year —will resume after a gap of nine months. The state government will now sponsor the programme.

The traffic police have purchased necessary equipment worth Rs. 3 lakh and constituted a new team to effectively implement the project.

The project was launched in August 2011 and was successful in the city. Till October 19 last year, the traffic police had fined nearly 2,000 motorists by clicking their photographs with a hand-held device connected to an integrated software system.

However, after the sponsors withdrew their support, the police asked the state higher authority to find a sponsor for the project.

After a long delay of ninth months, the higher authority has given permission to re-launch the plan.
