Gurgaon civic polls: Five women, man ousted from BJP won the polls

The ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) were left red-faced after the results of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) elections were announced on Sunday evening. Six of the 24 party members ousted on disciplinary grounds won the election as independent candidates.

The party, on September 17, removed 24 members, including six women, from 16 wards for contesting against the party’s nominated candidates. The rebels were denied party tickets after which they filed nominations as independents.

Sheetal Bagri from ward 10 defeated an independent candidate. She and her husband Mangat Ram Bagri, who won 2011 election from a BJP ticket, were both removed from the party.

Rajni Sahni from ward 17 and her husband Dalip Sahni were also removed from the party for contesting against party candidate Geeta Rani. Rajni defeated Geeta by a margin of 2,984 votes. Her husband Sahni was elected councillor as an independent candidate from ward 13 in 2011.

Likewise, Praveen Lata from ward 26 defeated BJP candidate Sonika by a margin of 1,123 votes.

From ward 30, Mahesh Dayma was removed from the party but he contested as an independent and defeated BJP’s Deepak Sharma by a margin of 1357 votes.

In ward 35, Kusum Yadav wife of former sarpanch Sahab Ram alias Lilu sarpanch sought a ticket from the BJP but was denied. The couple was removed from the party.

Kusum contested as an independent and won over another independent candidate, Pushpa Kumari.

The BJP managed to win 14 seats and has fallen short of a majority. It is speculated that the party is likely to take back the victorious rebels back to increase its tally in the house.

Taking a dig at the BJP, senior Congress leader Capt (retd) Ajay Singh Yadav said the result is a defeat for the BJP as the public has shown a mirror to the party for its faulty policies.

“Public will defeat the BJP in the next assembly and parliamentary elections and Congress will form the next government,” Yadav said.

“Party senior leaders from the state are busy in the national executive meeting and will ponder over the results soon. An analysis of ticket allocation and results will be done,” said BJP spokesperson Raman Malik.
