Gurgaon: Civil Hospital to get new airflow system

To meet the standards set by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), the five operation theatres at Gurgaon Civil Hospital will be renovated in the next two months.

“The renovation will begin in the next two months. The renovation and the equipment will be acquired by the state health department,” said Dr Assarudin, principal medical officer (PMO), Civil Hospital, Gurgaon.

According to officials of the hospital, a laminar airflow system will be put in place at each operation theatre (OT) to minimise the chances of infection. The laminar airflow system is a parallel airflow system wherein the impure air will be sucked out from the OT to be replaced with pure air.

“This system also counts the number of air circulations per minute,” explained the PMO.

Renovation of the OTs has been seen as a must under the NABH accreditation process as it focuses on patient safety.

The accreditation is structured to cater to the needs of the consumers and set benchmarks for the progress of the health industry.

The 100-bed hospital has four specialised OTs — eye, orthopaedics, gynaecology and ENT (ear, nose and throat) — and one for general surgeries.

“On an average, nine surgeries take place at the hospital daily. The gynaecology and eye OTs are generally the busiest,” said Dr Sanjay Narula, a senior medical officer at the hospital.

The general surgery OT, which hosts at least one surgery every day, also hosts cancer operations.

With a high number of tertiary surgeries taking place at the hospital, the setting up of a laminar airflow system is a must to decrease the odds of the infection spreading from one patient to the other.

Dr Narender Arora, director general for health, Haryana health department, had visited the hospital and reviewed the OTs on Wednesday.
