Gurgaon: Contractor accused of attack on kabaddi coach gets bail after support from lawyers

The Gurgaon Bar Association said the contractor’s arrest was meant to harass him and stop work on the judicial complex

A local court on Saturday granted bail to the contractor, who is allegedly accused of orchestrating a murderous attack on former Indian women’s Kabaddi coach on Thursday evening near the Mini-Secretariat. There was high drama in the afternoon at the Gurgaon district court before bail was granted to Ashish Goel, as Gurgaon Bar Association came out in full support of the contractor, who is building the Tower of Justice building, the new court complex.

The Bar Association opposed the decision to arrest Ashish Goel, the director of Nanu Mal and Company, under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code, which they said was meant to harass him and ensure that work on the new judicial complex is stalled.

“The bar association will go on an indefinite strike if such sections are added against the accused in haste, and without proper investigation. The work that was being done by the contractor had been agreed upon in a meeting chaired by the deputy commissioner and it was legal,” Sudesh Kumar Yadav, president, Gurgaon Bar Association, said.

The bar association members said that they were agitated because the work which was being opposed was meant to facilitate parking for common people. “We are not supporting any wrongdoing, but injustice should not happen and the project should not be stalled,” Vinod Kataria, secretary, Bar Association, said.

Advocate Rajiv Kaushik, who was present in court, said that the work on judicial tower has already been delayed by four years and undue haste to prosecute the accused would result in injustice. “Slapping sections that are disproportionate to the alleged crime is wrong and if it is being done under pressure, it should be opposed,” he said.

Sources said that the matter was resolved after it was brought to the notice of Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar. “The accused has been booked under sections 323, 506, 427, 279 and 336 of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court on Saturday and granted bail,” said a spokesperson for the police.
