Sanitation workers continued their protest outside the corporation office on Wednesday, demanding removal of the contractual system and regularisation of salaries, besides other demands.

The workers are demonstrating against the negligence of MCG to provide regular salaries, equivalent to the salaries paid to workers in the state of Punjab, non-issuance of ID cards, lack of proper equipment like dustbins, gloves, masks and medical facilities.

“We do not even have ID cards, which makes our work way too difficult as we don’t have any proof that we are the members of the municipal corporation, when police question us. We get abused and sometimes put behind bars for no reason. We are also asked to clean the houses of contractors, which is not our work,” said Bharat, a worker in the sanitation department of the MCG.

The second day of the protest has led to problems in maintenance of the sectors under the municipal corporation of Gurgaon (MCG). “Garbage is scattered all over the place and foul smell permeates the area. The corporation should at least pay them on time,” said Ramesh Vashishtha, general secretary of Sector 15, Part 1.
