Gurgaon: MCG frees up space for traffic between Rajiv Chowk and Subhash Chowk

Last week, the MCG officials had also carried out anti-encroachment drives at 10 places across the city.

A day after heavy congestion was reported on the 2.1 km stretch between Rajiv Chowk and Subhash Chowk, two of the most important junctions in the city, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) conducted anti-encroachment drives on both sides of the road on Tuesday for smoother flow of traffic.

The drive was conducted on the directions of MCG commissioner V Umashankar in the presence of police in order to ensure law and order is maintained and no untoward incident takes place.

Both the roads witness heavy traffic movement throughout the day as they connect to important landmarks and roads.

Rajiv Chowk connects people to the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, Sohna Road, Manesar, Civil Lines, Medanta-the Medicity hospital and Tau Devi Lal stadium while Subash Chowk connects motorists to Sohna Road, Sohna, Sector 34 and Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway.

On Monday, such was the congestion on the stretch owing to encroachments that motorists took nearly an hour to clear the route.

“The MCG officials were regularly receiving complaints from residents and motorists about encroachments taking up space on the main road. In addition, encroachments on footpaths forced pedestrians to walk on the main roads thereby endangering themselves. Owing to such reasons, an anti-encroachment drive was carried out to free space on the road,” SS Rohilla, spokesperson of MCG said.

“Driving on the stretch is a nightmare, it takes anywhere between 20-45 minutes to clear it. The unpredictability often causes an unnecessary delay in scheduled engagements. As vendors occupy a major portion of the road, there is little space left for traffic movement. Hopefully, after the drive by the MCG, the situation will improve,” Sejal Chauhan, a resident of Sector 47, said.

Last week, the MCG officials had also carried out anti-encroachment drives at 10 places across the city. Encroachments can be reported to the MCG on its toll-free number 1800-180-1817.
