Gurgaon municipal body to upgrade 225 parks as ‘Swachh Parks’

Around 225 parks in the city will get a makeover under the ‘Swachh Parks’ mission with the thematic drive that has started from June 1. This will focus on cleanliness in all popular forest sanctuaries, reserved forest areas, parks and animal welfare establishments.

The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) will follow standard operating procedures (SOP) for ‘Swachh Park’. A significant objective of this SOP is also to introduce a rating for all parks in the city.

“We have already started the process of maintaining a clean and hygienic environment in parks as well as maintain the environmental balance. We will also spread awareness in the public regarding the drive,” said, Amit Khatri, additional joint commissioner, MCG.

The proposed parameters that the civic agency needs to follow to make the parks ‘Swachh’ include maintaining the boundary wall around all parks, gates, signages prominently to be displayed around the park, seats, functional toilets, dustbins, water cartage equipment , composting pits and proper lighting in the park.

With a view to provide a clean environment, colour coded dustbins that should be placed at a distance of 250 meters to segregate waste. These bins can be separated under four categories that include paper, food, bottles and plastic waste. The drive also instructs the agencies to install composting pits of adequate size. The green waste collected should be periodically transported to nearby composting facilities. For large city parks, in-vessel composting set-up may be used for quick composting and avoiding periodic digging of pits.
