Gurgaon NRHM workers threaten strike if jobs are not made permanent

Contractual health workers under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in Gurgaon have threatened to go on strike if their jobs are not made permanent.

The contractual health workers under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in the city have threatened to go on a strike if their demand for permanent jobs is not fulfilled by the government.

A delegation of workers met the NRHM special secretary, Saket Kumar, on Wednesday in this regard.

The contractual health department workers had staged two state-wide protests last year, in July and in September, seeking job security, better salary, regularisation of holidays and updated pay scale.

Vikram Soni, the state secretary of NRHM, said, “We have apprised the government of our concerns and hope that our demands will be met.”

“We have been serving (the society) for more than five to 10 years, but the government is not considering granting us permanent status,” Hari Raj, the district secretary of NRHM, said.

The district has nearly 7,000 NRHM workers. A strike will affect the functioning of Civil Hospital, community health centres, primary health centres, death and birth registration branch and ultrasound centres.

The members said that they have been fighting a long battle but have not made any progress.

Saket Kumar, the special secretary of NRHM, said, “We will constitute a body to get a clear picture of the (workers’) demands and also take legitimate steps in this regard. We met a delegation of workers today (Wednesday). We will discuss their demands at length.”
