Gurgaon: Over 100 women, children participate in cyclothon

The cyclothon started at 6.30 am and the riders covered routes along Galleria Market. Vehicles were prohibited on the stretch from 5am to 8am.

In order to spread awareness on the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and the Gurgaon police came together and launched a cyclothon for women and children at Galleria Market in DLF Phase 4 on Sunday.

The joint initiative, which was conducted ahead of the International Women’s Day on March 8, had nearly 100 participants.

The cyclothon started at 6.30 am and the riders covered routes along Galleria Market. Vehicles were prohibited on the stretch from 5am to 8am.

DLF Phase 4 has several upscale gated societies such as Windsor Court, Regency Park 2 and Hamilton Court. Many mothers and children from these societies came to the event with their bicycles.

“I permit my daughter to cycle only within the society’s premises. Apart from safety, traffic on the roads is also a major concern. However, an initiative (cyclothon) for which roads are barricaded for traffic and with heavy police presence, I set aside my inhibitions and participated in the event with my daughter,” Radhika Mathur of Windsor Court said.

“The MCG extends its best wishes for an exciting event for the fitness savvy in Gurgaon with a reminder that women are genesis of a society. So let’s celebrate the International Women’s Day with a pledge to give them the respect they deserve,” Amit Khatri, additional commissioner of the MCG, said.

The event was flagged off by Sandeep Khirwar, commissioner of police, Gurgaon.

“Awareness and being self-empowered is the most important thing (for women). You show your empowerment on the streets of Gurgaon, show that you are powerful. Gurgaon Police always prioritises the issue of women safety.” Khirwar said.
