Gurgaon: Retired judge sent to jail for firing on electricity staff

Top bureaucrats, government officials, politicians, and a state Cabinet minister live at Gurgaon’s upscale Civil Lines area.

A retired Haryana judge, who fired gun shots at electricity staff on Wednesday evening, was sent to the jail after a court remanded him to the judicial custody for 14 days on Thursday.

AK Raghav, a retired additional sessions judge, was arrested late Wednesday night after he fired gun shots at workers rectifying electricity faults at Civil Lines area on Wednesday. The staff is employed with a contractor hired by the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN).

According to the workers, Raghav took out his revolver and shot in the air as he was annoyed with the frequent power cuts. No one was injured in the incident but the bullets hit the workers’ tractor puncturing a tyre. The accused was drunk when he fired at the discom staffs who were working near his house in Civil Lines, the police said.

Kumar said the judge returned with a revolver and fired five shots, four of which hit the tyres of a tractor. He said the workers saved by hiding behind the tractor trolley.

The police had booked Raghav and a case was lodged at Civil Lines police station under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault), 186 (obstructing public servant), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act.
